Lincoln council says it is working hard to improve Cornhill Market, despite three more units becoming empty since December.
The flagship £8m development now has 12 empty units – six retail spaces, three for fresh produce, two food and drink areas, and the mezzanine floor.
Council leaders have rejected opponents’ claims that the market had become an “embarrassing flop”.
Speaking at the full council meeting on Tuesday (January 21), Councillor Joshua Wells (Lab), the portfolio holder for economic growth, promised it would succeed.
“We’ve been working intensively over Christmas to identify gaps – what both the council and stallholders can do – to improve occupancy and diversity of stalls,” he said.
“It’s at 67 percent occupancy – not far off our 70 percent business case, and close to the national average.
“Councillors need to be positive and support these businesses, many of which are fledgling.”
The Cookie People, PS I Fudge You, and Fabric Tattoos Embroidery all left the market in the final weeks of 2024.
Councillor James Brown (Lib Dem) said he wanted the market to succeed, but said “all this public money invested has led to an embarrassing flop.”
Cllr Wells responded: “I completely reject that – the old Central Market was very sad and tired.
“The market is now busier than it used to be. It’s more modern, dynamic and inviting.
“We’re working hard to resolve issues, listening to ideas and concerns.
“We’re looking at events in the market and more money put into marketing. We’re also trying to be more specific with our support for stalls.”
He promised: “It is a great asset, and we will get it right.”
The refurbished market opened in May 2024, promising “a perfect blend of a traditional city marketplace and a high-quality food hall.”
