Lincolnshire’s Stokes Tea & Coffee expands into Nottinghamshire

A Lincoln-based coffee shop is expanding into Newark, offering a range of delicious coffees, teas, and treats at its new location in the Beaumond Cross development, situated in Newark Town Centre.

Newark and Sherwood District Council has taken significant steps to revitalize this part of the town, introducing several exciting new businesses to the area.

The redevelopment of the former Robin Hood Hotel into the Travelodge Hotel, along with three new commercial units, began in 2021. Stokes Tea & Coffee has now taken up the final available unit, marking the full occupancy of the development. Without the District Council’s proactive approach, this area might have remained overlooked and underutilized.

Stokes Tea & Coffee, well-known for its Lincolnshire locations, will open its new cafe on Monday, November 18.

This well-established family business boasts over 120 years of experience in sourcing, roasting, and blending their own coffee. In 2020, they earned recognition as finalists in the Great British Food Awards, along with accolades for their distinctive blends of coffee and tea.

The new Stokes café offers a unique and creative coffee experience. Their environmentally conscious roasting process, using an eco-friendly roaster, ensures that their signature blends are as fresh as possible while allowing customers to witness the roasting process firsthand.

The café also focuses on sustainability in its food offerings by transforming vegetable trimmings and smaller produce into delicious soups, quiches, and pies. Emphasizing fresh and seasonal ingredients, the menu delivers quality with each carefully crafted dish.

Councillor Claire Penny, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development at Newark and Sherwood District Council, commented: “The arrival of Stokes Tea & Coffee is fantastic news for Newark residents. It will infuse new energy into the town and further enhance our thriving selection of independent coffee shops and restaurants.

“We have prioritized bringing family-run and independent businesses to Newark, which helps create a more personal experience for shoppers and visitors alike. Stokes is also an example of a company using environmentally friendly practices while delivering excellent products to our high street.”

Newark

Stokes Tea & Coffee’s Newark location is one of its most modern yet. Drawing inspiration from their wholesale origins, the café features an industrial design paired with lively graffiti walls to create an urban, energetic atmosphere. Whether it’s grabbing a quick coffee, settling into the roastery window seat to people-watch, or enjoying a relaxed meal in the restaurant area, this café aims to be the perfect spot for any occasion. It will also be extending its hours on Fridays and Saturdays, staying open into the evenings.

Nick Peel, Managing Director at Stokes Tea & Coffee, shared his excitement: “We are delighted to be opening our new café in Newark. As a longstanding Lincolnshire business serving coffee since 1902, we look forward to becoming part of the Nottinghamshire community. We’re especially eager to introduce our on-site roaster, which will allow us to roast all the coffee served right in front of our guests.”

The new commercial units are designed to be highly adaptable, featuring access both from the town centre pedestrian route leading to Asda and from Lombard Street at the rear—one of Newark’s key junctions. This strategic location ensures high visibility and accessibility for visitors.

Starting from Sunday, November 24, free weekend parking will be available at District Council-owned car parks across Newark, coinciding with the Christmas Lights Switch-On. This initiative will run through Sunday, December 29, offering a convenient benefit for holiday shoppers and visitors.

District Council car parks included in the free weekend parking offer are Appleton Gate, London Road, The Wharf, Riverside, Riverside Arena, and Castle House locations, though it doesn’t extend to resident and contract car parks.
