Landscape architecture practice Influence Landscape Planning & Design has started work on transforming a former golf course in Lincolnshire into a wetland nature reserve.
The site, located at Sandilands near Sutton-on-Sea, is a 62-acre National Trust property. It will feature open water areas, islands, grasslands, sand dunes, reedbeds, and ponds, along with walkways and boardwalks for visitors to explore.
A new visitor centre and café, designed by Jonathan Hendry Architects, will provide funding support for the wetland’s conservation efforts once the project is completed in spring 2026. The new nature reserve lies on the ‘east coast flyway’ migration route, making it an essential stop for migrating birds and a habitat for diverse wildlife and plant species.
Influence, based in Newark, was selected by the National Trust to provide Stage 4 technical design services and oversee Stages 5-7 of the landscape architecture services, including onsite monitoring and implementation.
Shona Hatton, director at Influence Landscape Planning & Design, expressed her excitement about the project: “We are very proud to assist the National Trust in the delivery of its first nature reserve in the county. The land formation for the wetland creation is well underway, and it’s already possible to see the emerging shape of the final site.
“The Lincolnshire Coast is rich in biodiversity, and the National Trust’s efforts here aim to protect and enhance the local natural environment. Our designs focus on creating new habitats for migrating birds and many other species, while also providing accessible, inclusive spaces for people to enjoy.”
Kirsty James, general manager for Sandilands, added: “Significant work has been taking place behind the scenes, and we’re now excited to see the physical changes at Sandilands taking shape.
“We look forward to watching the area transform into a haven for wildlife, while also providing a peaceful space for people to walk, relax, and appreciate the beauty of nature.”
